This is the true story of Desirae and Lemel, and how they designed the perfect custom engagement ring to start their life together as husband and wife.
How did you two meet?
We met in March 2007 at a church event. We have known each other for 11 years, however we were not together that entire time. Even when we weren’t together, we were still very close and were able to grow our relationship as friends. Over the course of time, we decided that we wanted to take things to a relationship level. It feels like we are best friends that fell in love with each other! Now we can pull from both our friendship and love to have a forever marriage.
Tell us your proposal story!
Desirae loves to skydive, while I (Lemel) stay on the ground. So I recruited both Desirae’s sister and my sister to help. They told her they found a skydive deal and asked if she wanted to go. Of course she said yes, and asked if I wanted to go. I pretended I wasn’t even interested in going, but reluctantly agreed to watch. In the meantime, I got in touch with our families in extreme secrecy and arranged for them to meet at a predetermined location, but didn’t tell them why. They only knew they needed to be at a certain place, at a certain time.
On the day of the jump, when Desirae went to the airport, I had my friend to bring our families to the landing zone, where I had set up cameras to capture the moment. I had a dozen roses; 11 white and one red that also doubled as a ring box. I had also printed a 5x12 sign that said, “Desirae, will you marry me?” The family was all shocked and surprised! I had also gotten the tandem skydiving guides involved, so as they came down, she could see the banner and all her family. She landed right in front of me standing there with flowers in hand. I dropped to my knee and asked her the question we’d all been waiting for. Thank goodness, she said, “YES!”
Where did the inspiration for the design come from?
I was looking for a company that would allow me to have input on the design and look of the ring, without having to stay within a specific set of parameters. I sent eight pictures of different rings that each had parts that I liked. I wanted to incorporate different aspects into the ring I designed. I knew I wanted to have a ring that would never be described as “just like mine” by someone else. I wanted the ring to be as unique as my now wife. I wanted to a have a two-part ring that symbolized two becoming one. I also wanted to have an image on the bottom of the ring that would only be visible when both parts of the ring were together. Not only that, but Desirae decided to design a ring for me as well, and the image of two intertwined hearts goes across all of the rings when they are put together.
I incorporated one more symbolic element in the ring. I had my birthstone, blue zircon, set directly under the center stone of the ring, so you can’t see them just looking at the ring. But when Desirae looks down, her center stone will have a blue hue from the stones underneath. It symbolizes me always being right behind her to support her for the rest of our lives.
Did we meet all of your expectations from designed image to finished piece?
Definitely! I was extremely pleased with the process and the attention to detail that the team put into my dream ring. I never could have done it without the help and insight of the knowledgeable team. I even told them to remember the design because as we go through life, I will be back for anniversary enhancements!
