At Forever Artisans, we feature real life stories to inspire your custom design. This is the true story of how Katie and Geoff designed their dream engagement ring.

I am a born and raised California girl and was living in San Francisco after college while Geoff had moved from Milwaukee, WI to Chicago post-grad. He was out in the Bay Area for work and we met in a bar one night while I was out with my girlfriends. After a year of keeping in contact over social media I flew to Chicago to visit him for our second face-to-face meeting, ever! I was smitten and we dated long-distance for a year before I took the plunge and packed my apartment to head to the Midwest. We’ve now been together for 2.5 years, through two condos, one pup and now a wedding!

Since we were long distance dating for so long, either Geoff would come visit me in San Francisco or I would fly to Milwaukee (he had since moved back) or we would choose a spot to vacation. Shortly into our relationship we spent a week on Maui, one of my most favorite places in the world, and fell in love with the island life. This past summer we were back to the islands with my parents and sisters for a family vacation. Geoff and I took off a night from family activities to go off on our own and during a sunset walk on Baby Beach, talking about how far we had come in the two years since we were last on Maui, he dropped to a knee and asked me to marry him. We spent the rest of the week celebrating with my family, Hawaiian style!

Our specific proposal was a surprise to me, but the fact that he asked me to marry him was not. Marriage was an open conversation for a long time between us and Geoff had known that I was leaning towards a round stone. We actually went stone shopping together, and I talked about my specific style with the designers, but I put the rest of the design and decision making into Geoff and Forever Artisans' hands. I wanted the modern, sparkly feel of the round stone, but with a classic touch which was perfectly achieved with the tapered baguette side stones and double claw prongs. My one request was that the ring be as low-set as possible as I’m a nurse and can’t be busting through gloves. The basket setting along with the side stones keeps the stone relatively low and I’ve had zero problems with it!

We had actually never heard of Forever Artisans, but a good friend of ours is a photographer for the company and she took Geoff under her wing, introduced him to the design consultant and helped facilitate the process start to finish. Geoff didn’t want to use a jeweler that he couldn’t go to, see and feel the stones, etc. so it really worked out well for us that Forever Artisans is based in Milwaukee. Geoff and I chose the center stone two weeks before we flew to Maui and the FA team was able to create and expedite the most gorgeous custom ring and have it in hand before we boarded. Talk about service! For us this experience was quick, painless and we will be back for our custom bands.
